Why Your Training Efforts Might Be Missing the Mark (and how to fix it)

By February 15, 2024February 18th, 2024No Comments

“But … what if the training doesn’t work”

It’s a question people ask and debate for a long time.

Yes … but what if it does?

What if your training efforts transform your business beyond your wildest dreams.

We’re social media trainers and this blog is very much from a social media lense, but the points below could apply to any form of training you book.

Let’s ensure that your training efforts hit the mark every time

YOU’VE PICKED THE WRONG TRAINER

“Do your Research” shouted the conspiracy theorists.

The problem was their research amounted to 1 social media post or a 60 second youtube video.

“Doing your research” in the business world should be a lot more indepth

Whatever training you’re looking for

  • Look at the reviews
  • Look at their social media content
  • Read the about page of their website and find out how experienced they are
  • Read their blogs on their website
  • Email them or call them and explain exactly what you’re looking for

It’s a buyers market and all the information is out there.

Not all trainers are equal.

In my field of social media training, there are great trainers out there and equally terrible trainers out there.

Without the research you don’t know what you’re buying.

I don’t expect anyone to read all 700+ reviews we have across LinkedIn, Google and Facebook – but at the very least read a dozen or so to see if we’re the right fit for you.

THERE’S NO ACCOUNTABILITY

Accountability is the difference between success and failure.

Set goals, benchmarks and expected outcomes.

The training should be booked to raise the knowledge levels and plug a gap.

What then needs to happen, is it becomes a key part of the businesses activity.

On our social media training we always encourage the following

  • An accountability session 1-3 months after the initial session to highlight successes and blockages as well as a chance to answer any follow up questions
  • Social media becomes a key agenda point in every team meeting
  • Social media is added to job descriptions as a key role

THE TRAINING IS A ONE OFF

I studied Business and Marketing for 8 years for GCSE to University.

And during those 8 years we touched on the same subjects repeatedly.

We went indepth, updated and refined our knowledge.

Training in an organisation shouldn’t be a one off exercise to tick a box.

Training should be done repeatedly, so it becomes so ingrained in the day to day it sticks.

In some subjects, such as social media, we’d advise annual training as the world changes so fast.

If you’re reading this and thinking this is just an upsell

Ask yourself how many times were you taught to clean your teeth or potty train before it stuck?

10x / 20x / More.

Training is the reason you have clean teeth and aren’t defecating around the office.

YOU DON’T REVIEW YOUR NOTES

Yes – the trainer can just send you the Powerpoint

But your notes will be specific to yourself and they’ll stick if you read your own notes.

Diarise some time after the sessions to write more notes and action points up.

Don’t just file away the notes and never look at them again.

When you’re unsure of what to do – go back to the notes

When you want to get back on track – go back to the notes

When someone asks you a question – go back to the notes

YOU DON’T PUT IN THE WORK AFTER

Training + Action

You often need to work after training.

You could have the best trainer in the world, but without action it means nothing.

We train businesses every day and we know that when we turn up we deliver 100% on the brief.

There’s a difference however after training between those that immediately get to work vs those that think turning up at the training alone will do the job.

Does this resonate with your training efforts?
