I remember my early days of Twitter
Way back in 2009
Twitter was such a friendly helpful community where we had light discussions about our interests and Brexit and Trump were words that didn’t bombard us on a hourly basis
And local residents were more excited about a new business opening than they were moaning about litter or pot holes
With close friends we often talk about the Twitter of old and how in many ways it was a much friendly place from 2009-2012 than it is now
A small part of that helpful community was Follow Friday, which looking at my twitter feed today anyone who’s joined twitter recently won’t be aware of
SO WHAT IS FOLLOW FRIDAY?
A Follow Friday is a post done on Friday where Twitter users recommend to their followers other Twitter users to follow
In the early days of Twitter it was a great chance to find other interesting Twitter users to follow
The key components of a Follow Friday was
#FF + Twitter Username + a great reason for users to follow
i.e #ff @altrinchamhq The Best Social Media Company in #Manchester bringing you daily social media tips + breaking news from #Altrincham
In many ways Follow Friday was key part of how people built up their audience
In later days people lost the core of what Follow Friday was – great reasons to follow – and ended up being lazy with just a list of user names
WHY HAS IT VIRTUALLY DISAPPEARED?
People built up audiences
They got bored
They ran out of new people to recommend
Perhaps these are 3 of the reasons Follow Friday has virtually disappeared
But even I was shocked that at the time of writing this blog only 4 people out of 4000+ people I follow have done a follow Friday in the past 3 weeks
SO IS IT TIME TO TRY AND REVIVE IT?
Community is still important and shouting about others that do great things is important
So should we all try to do our part to help others
It’s simple and easy and takes less than a minute to do
So why not do your bit today
Recommend those people that make your Twitter feed so much better
Support those that support you
Help those people that make your smile
And do it each and every Friday
