Interesting marketing examples that we’ve seen on our travels.
Some of these marketing examples are on social media, while others are more traditional.
The key difference in this blog is that these examples are predominantly from small businesses, rather than the often-used “genius” examples of Aldi, Lidl, Innocent, and Pizza Express.
Alex McCann, owner of Altrincham HQ, has guided thousands of businesses in social media strategy over the past 15 years. With a client list featuring BBC, Manchester City, Selfridges, and Costa Coffee, his Manchester-based company manages over 200 hours of campaigns monthly, adapting to real-time social media shifts.
A former journalist with blogs reaching over half a million readers, Alex also led a 15,000-capacity arts festival. With 700+ customer reviews, Altrincham HQ is ranked the UK’s top social media marketing service on FreeIndex, working with businesses nationwide on platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
Here are the Interesting Marketing Examples
THE OLD HALL, TIMPERLEY
I’m one of the few people that looks at a bundle of flyers through my frontdoor.
But I always like to see how good or bad the marketing is with bulk flyer delivery from Royal Mail (or other providers)
“Raise A Glass” – a fundraiser for the Royal British Legion stood out.
The copywriting sells the benefits “Pop in and purchase a Limited-Edition Poppy Glass to keep and say cheers all year”
“All Profits Will Be Going To The Royal British Legion During The Poppy Appeal” emphasis it’s not just a token gesture
“We’ve got loads of events planned to celebrate our veterans this November, visit our Facebook page to find out more” merges the digital world with the traditional.
On the flip side are 30% off main vouchers.
I haven’t been to the Old Hall in years – but this marketing would very well get through the front door.
Manchester Academy
Very simple
Very Easy To Do
And something all established businesses could do.
Manchester Academy have gigs on most nights of the year and they have a strong pedigree of getting bands on small stages before selling out Arenas and Stadiums.
The 2 examples here are Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse, but a number of posters around the venue highlight a diverse range of names the whole world knows now.
When was the last time you mentioned your previous success stories?
DOUGH161 – The Salutation Pub, Manchester
That’s enough to get my attention and make me smile.
I love a play on words.
Whether you’re old enough to remember area codes for landlines or you’re younger and aware of the “O161 Manny on the Map” calling card, this will raise a smile.
A good name gets talked about—I actually found out about this poster for pizza because friends mentioned it the moment I walked into the pub.
You’d have to be pretty miserable not to smile at this.
THE CON CLUB, ALTRINCHAM – Halloween Display
The Con Club in Altrincham is one of the most popular businesses in town.
As well as great food, customer service, and social media, one of the main reasons is this:
They have city-centre-sized ambitions in a small town.
Their Christmas and Halloween displays are always up there with the best in Manchester.
Sure, painted windows might stand out, but nothing stands out more than huge, massive monsters coming out of the upstairs windows.
Once again, The Con Club is being talked about and shared all over social media.
HONEST GREENS, LISBON
Marketing starts with the product itself.
Words are important.
You can see from the photo that this looks gorgeous, but if I see the words “Cauliflower Mocha Brownie,” the little vegan in me is going to make room for dessert.
There’s intrigue, and there’s scarcity. What does this taste like, and if I don’t try it now, will I ever get the chance again?
The brownie tasted wonderful, and it gave me something to talk about.
What have you bought because the description made you think, “I MUST”?
JACK THE CHIPPER, LONDON
Can you call a business Jack The Chipper in 2024?
Will they get cancelled?
Is it any worse than Codfather mafia puns?
Controversy won’t work for most businesses, but this chippy in London certainly grabs your attention.
What do you think of this—good or bad?
