Today I’m going to talk about the benefits of writing your own content.
As AI takes over the narrative, it’s easy to default to the easiest option of putting a prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, or many of the AI tools out there. I could have done it for this blog and gone from prompt to publish in under five minutes. I could repeat for the next 1-2 hours and bang out 20 blogs in the same time it will take me as a human to write just one. Those 20 blogs wouldn’t be bad, but what they would be is average. The complete average of everything that’s gone before. And as a business owner, you don’t want to be average. You want to let your copy flow with personality, experience, and the true, unique human being you are.

DO PEOPLE STILL READ BLOGS?
They sure do
- 80% internet users regularly read blogs.
- 600 million blogs are online
- An estimated 7.5 million new blogs are being published daily
And remember, the written word isn’t just for blogs.
93% of purchasing decisions are influenced by social media.
That’s all the words you put on your LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, X content.
THE HONEST TRUTH ABOUT WRITING YOUR OWN CONTENT
- It will take time to write, especially at the beginning
- You will get writer’s block from time to time … even when you write regularly
- Not everything you ever write will be your best work – but it will be your best work at the time
- Your copy will have spelling and grammar mistakes occasionally, even if you’ve triple-checked it
- But writing regularly will change your world
By Writing Your Own Content You Amplify Your Own Voice
I write like I speak.
Those who know me will be reading this in my voice.
For those who don’t know me, I hope to convey what I’ll be like once you meet or work with me.
My voice. My experience. My linguistic quirks.
When people are buying a service they’re very much buying into the person delivering it, and each piece of content published be it a short LinkedIn posts or longform piece of content like this, draws people in.
Remember what I said about AI being the average of everything.
When you write your own content, your audience trusts you. They can tell it’s written by a real person who actually does the work. It naturally attracts the kind of clients who get you. Perhaps more importantly, it filters out those who don’t.
If you’re relying on AI for social media posts, blogs, and comments, you risk just sounding like everyone else rather than yourself.

By Writing Your Own Content You Gain A Greater Understanding of Your Subject
One of the joys and benefits of writing is that you gain a truly deeper understanding of your subject matter.
It’s 1-2 hours thinking about the subject matter you’re writing about.
That’s why when we were at school studying Macbeth or Z For Zachariah, you spent time each week writing essays about it. To truly drill down and understand what you had read and consumed.
That’s why, as social media trainers, we often have multiple tasks in sessions so you gain a depth of understanding.
Often our blogs will be inspired by a brief question, conversation or social media post.
For instance, this post was inspired by a LinkedIn post titled “Should I start running H.I Courses?”
“H.I = Human Intelligence
I’m half joking here, but I’m thinking of rebranding my Blogging Workshops and Idea Generation workshops to H.I Workshops.
For 16 years, I’ve helped businesses
- Identify their content pillars
- Come up with unlimited ideas for social media
- Come up with a process for creating weekly blogs
- Write content to get more visibility, engagement, and sales
And it works.
It actually helps businesses get more £££s rather than just tick a box with marketing.
When I look at the list of what I do above, AI might come up with 25% of what I’d do, but the 75% is out-of-the-box ideas that AI would never come up with.”
And a comment suggested I should write about the benefits of writing your own content, so here I am.
2 hours to really drill down on this subject and bring greater clarity to you.
By Writing Your Own Content You Become A Better Communicator
Writing content helps me become a better communicator.
It helps me
- Have better 121 conversations
- Be a better public speaker
- Be a better trainer
- Answer questions without pausing
It’s rare that I have to pause and say Let me think about it.
And when I do have to do that, I go back to point 2.
I research, I act, I write about it to go truly deep into the subject.

By Writing Your Own Content You Spot New Ideas and Opportunities
When you’ve written nearly 700 blogs, you’re always on the lookout for inspiration.
It might be the former journalist in me, but the inspiration is everywhere.
Training sessions. Networking Meetings. Social Media Management client stories. Social Media Comments.
Just writing that line out made me realise there’s a blog on finding inspiration for your content.
If you’re struggling with the basics of ideas, we actually offer that service for you https://www.altrinchamhq.co.uk/services/social-media-marketing-services-creative-content-ideas/
You create a genuine legacy
Before I launched my social media company, Altrincham HQ, I was a journalist and events promoter.
I was publishing at least 4-7 blogs a week back then.
That legacy that I’ve left (and backed up) still astounds me to this day.
When I launched Altrincham HQ in 2009, I wanted a similar legacy of marketing and social media content that has truly helped people.
I’m not being a snob here, but there is absolutely no legacy in saying you put in 700 prompts into Ai to produce 700 blogs.
You can justify it in your head that you have saved time, but that content output is on the back of people who have written actual work and created a meaningful legacy.
What do you want to be remembered for?
