Periscope Twitter

Last month we talked about Meerkat and Periscope (twitter’s own live video streaming app) which launched recently and are the new frontiers in video marketing.

What they offer in essence is a live streaming app with a more user-friendly and engaging interface than UStream or Livestream

If you want to read about the benefits of both look at our blog here on Meerkat, Periscope and Live Streaming (but bare in mind it’s 3 weeks since Periscope launched and updates are happening all the time)

In our latest blog we want to talk about Periscope and offer a Beginners Guide To Periscope

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO PERSICOPE – THE VIEWERS GUIDE

1. FOLLOW A WIDE VARIETY OF PEOPLE
Can you remember when you 1st signed up to Twitter and you followed a handful of people and thought “what’s the point of twitter”

Then you followed a few hundred more and realised that twitter becomes more useful and varied when you’ve followed a number of people

At the moment Periscope has a lot of lurkers and a lesser degree of broadcasts so don’t worry about following a large number of people – chances are a lot of people have signed up and don’t plan to broadcast in the immediate future, but it puts you on their radar for broadcasts

Where Periscope wins over Meerkat at the moment is it’s twitter integration and there are 3 easy ways to find new people to follow

1. Twitter Suggestions – Periscope lists those that you follow on twitter that are using Periscope – check this once a week as new people download the Periscope app
2. Search – If you know the name of the person you’re looking for type it in search – alternatively try searching for your home town to find hyperlocal Scopers
3. Go Through Followers / Following List of your followers – why not look through our Periscope followers @altrinchamhq to see the variety of people following ourselves

2. TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT PERISCOPE
Since I downloaded the App I haven’t stopped talking about how good Periscope is for both personal use and business

On a novelty level I’ve watched Radio Presenter Tony Blackburn giving a guided tour of London from his car, I’ve been tweeting with Boxer Amir Khan about why Meerkat and Periscope need to go on Android and i’ve seen sights and cities from around the world

On a business level I’ve watched broadcasts from the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk and Grant Cardone as well as seen how small businesses can use it for marketing purposes. Even in a small town like ours in Altrincham The Cinnamon Club and Hale Grill have already used it to show their venues off

I’ve broadcast to 50 people at a networking group in Sale and done broadcasts from home to 130 people – the attention from early adopters is all here

So go use it and tell all your friends about it – don’t keep Periscope your little secret

3. ALTERNATE BETWEEN BROADCASTS FROM THOSE YOU FOLLOW AND GLOBAL BROADCASTS
One of the big bugbears about Periscope before the App updates was the sheer noise of the feed

Now Periscope is separated in to 2 feeds

* Broadcasts From Those You Follow
* Global Broadcasts

It’s so easy to get heads down in your own circle, but it’s great to just log on to periscope periodically and look what is going on the wider world

Periscope is real time. It’s Fresh. It’s new. There are so many possibilities. And Periscope global feed is connecting the world

4. WATCH WHAT’S WORKING FOR OTHERS
In our 2 weeks on Periscope we’ve seen Football Clubs, Bars, Churches, Bands, Business Gurus, TV Channels, Graphic Designers, Window Companies and many different industries use Periscope

Many people are currently in viewer mode rather than broadcast mode which is good as people are sat in the office learning what is working and what is not working from early adopters

Keep watching, picking up tips and learning from these leaders on the platform so that when you dip in and do your 1st broadcast you make it the best possible one
